Unlike the low-budget horror movie that the band was named after, 10000 Maniacs is anything but low- budget when it comes to their meaningful lyrics and original sound. Beginning as Still Life in 1981 in Jamestown, New York, the band consisted of Natalie Merchant, Robert Buck, Dennis Drew and Steve Gustafson. Later that fall the band took on new member, John Lombardo and changed their name to 10000 Maniacs. The quickly began working on independent recordings, and released the EP Human Conflict Number Five and Secrets of the I-Ching. Their touring soon generated them a pretty good sized fan base because they were introducing a sound that nobody was really familiar with.

As a result, they were signed to Elektra in 1984, where they released their major label debut, Wishing Chair. This album helped push the band to the mainstream scene. In My Tribe was released in 1985, and reached platinum status with the hit singles "What's the Matter Here" and "Like the Weather." "These Are Days" and "Candy Everybody Wants" were two major hits off of the album Our Time in Eden which was released in 1992. The band was asked to play for President Clinton's MTV Inaugural Ball, due to their overwhelming success with the song "These are Days". Natalie Merchant soon announced that she was leaving the band to pursue a solo career, which turned out to be very successful in its own right. 10000 Maniacs were not fazed however, and continued creating without her. Mary Ramsey was the new replacement for Merchant and the new lineup released Love Among the Ruins in 1997 and The Earth Pressed Flat in 1999. Unexpectedly, a year later guitarist and founding member Robert Buck passed away. Despite the hardships that the band endured over the years, their songs have become classics that placed them at the top of the pop and folk world and created a name for themselves.
